Soccer Alumni Cheer Current Jays at 8th Annual Homecoming
On Saturday, Jan. 7, alumni gathered in support of current Blue Jays for Jesuit’s 8th Annual Soccer Homecoming. The event honored three state championship teams — 1987, 2002, and 2007 — during a pre-game ceremony celebrating the 30th, 15th, and 10th anniversaries of their winning seasons.
Prior to the varsity match pitting the Jays against the Catholic High Bears, alumni and their families mingled in a heated Pontiff Pavilion at John Ryan Stadium for a reception hosted by the advancement office and parents of current student players. Though it was the coldest day of the year — and, perhaps, the winter — so far, everyone enjoyed an afternoon of food, refreshments, and Blue Jay Spirit soccer-style beneath beautiful clear blue skies.
A special treat for the former players was getting to greet and shake hands with current Blue Jays in the locker room before kick off. During halftime, alumni and their children were welcomed to Alumni Field for an annual “free-play” opportunity. Many of the future stars could be seen dribbling special “Blue Jay Soccer” balls, a gift of today’s soccer program.
Alumni cheered their alma mater on to a 2-0 victory. Following the game, the Jays and the Bears shook hands and then sat down for a common meal. Special thanks to current parent Bonnie Hatrel and her fellow parent workers for providing plenty of food and Blue Jay hospitality.
