The Jesuit lacrosse team traveled to Shreveport over the weekend to play three games at the beginning of the 2017 season. Winning two of three games on the weekend, the Blue Jays return to the practice field to improve in areas where they fell short and reinforce areas of strength.

Saturday 2/4/16

Win: Jesuit 12; Plano East 11 (double overtime)

The first of the games was a double overtime thriller against Texas-based Plano East. Freshman Clark Romig dominated at the face-off position, controlling the face on 17 out of 22 attempts and coming up with the ground ball himself on eight of those. Other team leaders included junior Peyton Queyrouze with 6 ground ball and seniors Parker Simoneaux and William Crumley with four each. Simoneaux led all scorers with four goals, including one with 30 seconds remaining in regulation to force the first overtime. Senior Briggs Lucia had three goals, and senior Michael Smart added two more. The first overtime remained scoreless, but senior Jack Cronvich scored one minute into the second overtime for a sudden victory for Jesuit. Senior Grant Stevens had four saves at goaltender in the contest.

Win: Jesuit 15; Airline 5

The Jays had a little easier time with the second opponent, Airline High from Bossier City. The big story of the contest was Jesuit’s relentless defense, capped by junior goaltender Ryan Hamilton who amassed 13 saves in the goal. Leading scorers were sophomores Elliott Hattier and Zack Charneco, junior Aiden Roberts, and seniors Noah Martin, Parker Simoneaux, and Michael Smart, all with two goals each. Other team leaders included Louis Flores and Luke Powers with five ground balls each.  Hattier and Romig split time at face-off while winning 10 out of 24.

Sunday 2/5/16

Loss: Jesuit 5, Loyola 8

In the final game of the weekend, turnovers plagued the Jays as they fell to Loyola Prep of Shreveport. Although Jesuit was able to overcome a second quarter non-releasable penalty, the team did not capitalize on any of the four Loyola penalties. Senior Grant Stevens had eight saves in the goal. Leading scorer was junior Aiden Roberts with two goals, while seniors Noah Martin, Parker Simoneaux, and Michael Smart had one each. Other team leaders included junior Peyton Queyrouze with seven ground balls, while Roberts contributed four and Martin and Simoneaux had three each

Head lacrosse coach Stephen Krobert ’05 was very pleased with his team’s performance on Saturday. “We were down from the start against Plano East, but our guys never gave up and kept fighting back.  In our game against Airline, our second lines stepped up well to give our starters a break.” Although Sunday’s defeat was a difficult pill to swallow, Krobert added, “Our mistakes on the starting lines showed us our weaknesses, and we’re going to work on them for district play. I give credit to Loyola prep for capitalizing on the mistakes to win the game.”

The Jesuit lacrosse team has plenty of time to improve over the next week. The next game is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 14 against Mandeville.
