Preparing to open district play on Tuesday night against Holy Cross at John Ryan Stadium, the Jays squeezed in three wins during the weekend Gerard Oubre Tournament as a big league confidence booster. With pitching on point and batting rallies a plenty, the Jays are looking good as they make the march through their district opponents. The Blue Jays are now 13-6 on the season.

 Saturday, March 18 at 3:00 PM – WIN

Jesuit 13 – Hahnville 3

In the final game of the tournament at Hahnville, the Jays made easy work of the Hahnville Tigers, completing the game in five innings after going ahead 10 runs.

Jesuit went ahead three runs in the top of the second inning. Senior Marc Theberge (3) was the first to score for the Jays, being driven in by a single from fellow senior Mack Miller (7). Sam Ovella (18) was the next to come in, followed by Miller on an RBI double by junior Michael Torry (21).

On defense, the squad had a scare in the bottom of the second as the Tigers loaded the bases. A change in pitching preserved a scoreless inning, as senior Zack Smith (12) came on to strike out two batters and end the inning on a grounder.

Four more runs came in for the Blue Jays in the fourth inning, but the Tigers were able to get on the board themselves, bringing the score to 7 – 2. After six more Jesuit runs in the top of the fifth, Hahnville needed to score two runs to keep the game going, but only brought in one to end the game 13 – 3.

Saturday, March 18 at 11:45 AM – LOSS

Jesuit 2 – Destrehan 3

In the early game on Saturday, the Jays had a tough time with the Wildcats from Destrehan.

Junior Lee Blosser (17) got the start for the Jays and struck out two in the night.

All of the scoring action for Jesuit took place in the top of the first inning. Senior Hunt Conroy (5) stole a couple of bases to advance to third and was driven home by senior Marc Theberge (3). Soon after senior Sam Ovella (18) drove home senior Stephen Sepcich (17) to give the Jays a 2-0 lead that they held until the bottom of the fourth.

Destrehan put one on the board in the bottom of the fourth and added two more in the bottom of the sixth, when Chris Beebe took over on the mound.

The Jays had a shot to pull it out in the top of the seventh, but couldn’t pull through and fell to Destrehan 3-2.

The Jays tallied seven hits in the loss.

Friday, March 17 at 6:30 PM – WIN

Jesuit 3 – C. Lafourche 2

Friday night saw a rematch between the Blue Jays and the team they had traveled to play the night before. This time it was on Jesuit’s turf and complemented by some 100 Jesuit baseball alumni in attendance to cheer on this year’s team.

Jesuit led 2-1 for most of the game, driving in a run in each of the first two innings and allowing Central Lafourche one in the bottom of the second.

In the first inning junior Michael Torry (21) advanced to third based after a walk, a stolen second base, and an advance to third on a wild pitch. He was batted in by a base hit from senior Hunt Conroy (5).

More wild pitching by Central Lafourche brought in another run in the second. Senior Marc Theberge (3) ripped a double into the gap and was advanced to third on a base hit by freshman Parker Serio (15). On a wild pitch, Theberge came diving through home plate just under the tag of the pitcher.

It wasn’t until the top of the sixth that the Trojans shocked the Jays with a two out shot to tie the score 2-2. Senior Collin Kulivan (25) came out in relief for the Jays to provide some security in the top of the seventh, and the Jays were in a position to succeed heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Senior Tripp Ledet (6) took the walk to get to first, then stole second and third to get into scoring position. The Jays won the game as senior Hunt Conroy (5) popped a shot just inside the right field line to put the Jays ahead 3-2.

Thursday, March 16 at 4:00 PM – WIN

Jesuit 4 – C. Lafourche 3

On Thursday, Jesuit traveled down to Central Lafourche for the opening game of the Gerard Oubre Tournament.

Senior Davis Martin (1) took the mound and had an impressive seven strikeouts in just over six innings.

The Blue Jays jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the second inning as senior Mack Miller (7) drove in senior Stephen Sepcich (27).

The score remained 1-0 through three innings until Sepcich again crossed the plate, this time at the command of his own bat as he smashed a solo homerun in the top of the fourth. Senior Marshall Lee (9) also crossed the plate in the fourth on a drive by freshman Parker Serio (15).

The Trojans put one on the board themselves in the bottom of the inning to make the score 3-1 after four. In the top of the fifth inning, senior Nick Ray (12) added his solo shot over the fence to put the Jays ahead 4-1.

Central Lafourche did not go quietly, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh to give Jays a scare. Junior Christian Hess (14) came on in relief to retire the side and preserve Jesuit’s 4-3 lead.

The team had 10 hits and just one error in the outing and held Central Lafourche to just five hits.
