Jesuit 6 – Shaw 5

After heavy rains on Saturday delayed the Jesuit -Shaw baseball game twice, the teams finally took the field at 5:00 PM at John Ryan Stadium. In their first of two district games against the Eagles, the Jays completely controlled the game for six innings, and although the Eagles scored four runs in the top of the seventh, the Jays endured the scare to claim a 6-5 victory.

Junior Christian Hess (14) took the mound as the starter and pitched six excellent innings. He struck out six batters in the process. In the top of the seventh, the Jays switched pitchers three times before landing on Davis Martin (1) to finish out the last two outs. Martin struck out one in 2/3 of an inning.

Offensively, the Jays produced a consistent attack, scoring runs in every inning except the fourth. Senior Sam Ovella (18) got things started in the first inning with a 2-run single. The Jays led 2-1 at the end of the inning.

In the bottom of the second, senior Marshall Lee (10) popped off a single before stealing second and third bases. Senior Bryce Musso (9) then brought him home on a sacrifice fly to make the score 3-1.

In the bottom of the third, senior Stephen Sepcich (27) drilled an inside-the-park home run to improve Jesuit lead to 4-1.

The third inning brought home the fourth run for the Blue Jays. Senior Stephen Sepcich (27) showed both his batting strength and base-running speed by rounding all the bases for an in-the-park home run.

After a quiet fourth inning, Sepcich crossed the plate again in the fifth on a triple by Marc Theberge (3). Marshall Lee (10) then came home for the second time himself in the sixth thanks to senior Hunt Conroy’s single.

Leading 6-1, the Jays had things all but tied up going into the top of the seventh. Or so they thought. After two runs scored for Shaw, the Jays brought in junior Lee Blosser (17). Blosser got the first out of the inning, but gave up two runs in the process. The Jays gave junior Shane Lanson (24) a shot before bringing in senior ace Davis Martin (1) to face the last three batters and end the game.

After the 6-5 victory,  the Jays prepare to take on the Eagles again on Tuesday at 6:30 PM at Shaw. The baseball team is now 2-1 in district play, 15-7 overall.
