Due to rescheduling to include podracing, JMC Theaters elected to postpone the Wednesday viewing of Harry Potter and the transformation from Jesuit to “Jes-warts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.” The Potter-themed event was set to be a quidditch match on Will Clark field. The match took place on Thursday, September 7, a week after Welcome Week’s final event.

JMC Theaters put together an Oscar-winning show Thursday during lunch. After such a horrible week of weather, the skies could not have looked better for the all-encompassing outdoor finale. Students of every grade level took part in different sporting events like “3 Flies In” and Spikeball. The music and courtyard games attracted a large crowd outside to celebrate a great week at the first pep rally of the school year. Pep talks from Blue Jay football players, musical entertainment from the Blue Jay drumline, and giveaway student section t-shirts were three of most riveting parts of the pep rally. Lunchtime in Traditions Courtyard was quite a sight to see.

The stage was set for Star Wars action in the Student Commons on Wednesday during lunch. The event was podracing, taken from the popular sport in the less-developed regions of the galaxy. Podracing is featured in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Participants wore a helmet and armor and used cardboard, a rolling cart, rope, and two partners to race around the track.

Monday Morning Assembly: “Jesuit Goes to the Movies”

Morning Assembly on Monday was a cinematic experience for the nearly 1400 students standing at attention in the Traditions Courtyard. Student body president Paul Treuting ascended the podium dressed in Harry Potter costume, only to be interrupted by Woody from Toy Story, who was in turn interrupted by a jock from the latest hit sports movie. Then after all that, Darth Vader appeared on the courtyard balcony, causing utter confusion among the students and faculty. Is there a reason for all this drama? Is Jesuit High School going to the movies or something?

Well, it’s that time of the year again!

It is Welcome Week, and Jesuit is indeed hitting theaters for a 5-star movie tour. “Jesuit Goes to the Movies” is the official theme for a fun-filled, cinematic 2017 Welcome Week. The events are hosted by “JMC Theaters” (a pseudonym for the Jesuit student council, this week masquerading as the Jesuit Movie Council).

Monday’s Lunchtime Activity: “Who is Mr. Incredible?”

Monday’s lunchtime activity featured the Pixar movie The Incredibles, which was played throughout the school day on the TV in the Student Commons. The activity itself was a Strong Man competition that aimed to find the next hero, Mr. Incredible. Tuesday’s activity was set to be Star Wars-based podracing, which explains the presence of Darth Vader at assembly today. However, school was closed on Tuesday, Aug. 29; so, podracing took place in the commons on Wednesday.

It was worth it, though, as JMC produced an Oscar-winning sports flick on Thursday during lunch. Students of every grade level took part in different sporting events for the last Welcome Week activity. Courtyard games like “3 Flies In” and Spikeball gathered big crowds outside before the first pep rally of the school year. Lunchtime outside was more incredible than Monday’s event.

Tomorrow, the school community concludes Welcome Week together with the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit. On Friday, Sept. 1, students should come to school wearing a dress coat, dress shirt, tie, slacks, belt, dress shoes, and socks. Students may wear a suit if they wish.

The Student Council came together to make these events possible, planning and preparing for this exciting week of welcome back to school. Before they put their hard work into action, they were sworn into office last Friday at morning assembly. Now, they are official; and the 2017 Welcome Week is, too.
