Swimmers Capture District, Move Focus to Metro

Senior swimmers receive their first place district trophy.
On the evening of Monday, Oct. 23, District 9-5A held its championship swim meet at UNO’s Aquatic Center at the Lakefront. With drive and humility, the Jesuit team fielded a winner in all but two heats. In many cases, Blue Jay swimmers found themselves competing against each other for the top spot. In fact, the top four swimmers in each of the first four heats were all wearing “J’s” on their caps. Therefore, head coach Bret Hanemann ’85 and his team were fortunate to focus on the little things rather than the final numbers on the scoreboard.

Jesuit’s squad won the district meet by capturing 630 total points, fielding six first-place swimmers, three first-place relay teams, and finishing 207 points higher than district runner-up Holy Cross.
One of the little things Jesuit focused on, and accomplished, was fielding more swimmers for the state meet. Throughout the season, every swimmer in Louisiana has the chance to earn a spot in the state meet by putting forth one solid effort and finishing with a “qualifying” time.

“The boys swam well at district,” said Coach Hanemann. “The team was able to qualify a few more swimmers for state…and the relays are really coming together. This is a busy week for them since we have metro on Thursday and Saturday.”
The two Jays who earned their spot on the state bus to Sulphur were senior Andrew Dufour in the 100-freestyle and junior Evan Ehrensing in the 100-backstroke.
Notable swims also came from senior captain Jack Baudoin, who won the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle; junior Davis Edwards, who won the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle; and sophomore Mike Foley, who comfortably finished the 200-yard individual medley (IM) five seconds ahead of the next best swimmer. As Coach Hanemann noted, the Jesuit relay teams are “really coming together” after going 3-for-3 in the 200-yd. freestyle relay, the 400-yd. freestyle relay, and the 200-yd. medley relay.
The Blue Jays shift their focus to Metro Prelims on Thursday, Oct. 26, and the Metro Finals on Saturday (Oct. 28) (click links for times). Both meets take place at the UNO Aquatic Center.
