The 2017 Allstate Sugar Bowl Metro High School Swim Champions

The last time Jesuit swimming lost metro, head coach Bret Hanemann ’85 was a sophomore at Carrollton and Banks. “In 1983,” Coach Hanemann recalled, “we still ended up winning state that year and haven’t lost metro since.”

Continuing the win streak, the Blue Jays swam to their 35th consecutive metro championship on Saturday, Oct. 28, at the UNO Aquatic Center. Of course, this means the Jays have won every year (7-in-a-row) since the Allstate Sugar Bowl began sponsoring the Metro High School Swim Championships in 2011.

Jesuit scored 504 points to second-place St. Paul’s 215 in the meet. Junior Charles Korndorffer won the 100-yard butterfly, setting a metro meet record with a time of 49.47 seconds; he also won the 100-yard backstroke and was named swimmer of the meet.

Sophomore Mike Foley won the 100 and 200 freestyle. Korndorffer and Foley, who each won two individual events, also competed on two winning relay teams.

The Allstate Sugar Bowl metro meet hosted a total of 44 teams (boys and girls) and nearly 500 individual swimmers. Jesuit and its district competed with teams from the Northshore, Southshore, Thibodaux, Houma, and Morgan City. Since his team faced such a heavy amount of swimming throughout October, Coach Hanemann explained how his swimmers will pace their conditioning in preparation for the state meet.

“We start tapering the next couple of weeks, and we start bringing everyone’s swimming yardage down. We do this so that, by the time state comes around, their bodies are well-rested and prepared for the length they will swim.”

The LHSAA State Championship swim meet will begin with Prelims on Friday, Nov. 17 and conclude with Finals on Saturday, Nov. 18. Click the links for more info including time and directions.
