Jesuit-based Retif Oil, running almost on empty, squeaked out a 5-4 win on Monday evening, July 8, against its American Legion nemesis, Peake BMW (Brother Martin).

It was the first time in four games the two teams have played so far this season that Retif (22-6) came out on top. In three previous encounters, Peake left bruising sets of tread marks on the boys in blue, particularly in the June 24 and July 7 games.

The two teams will meet for a fifth time this season on Tuesday, July 9 at 2 p.m. at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium. The winner will have earned the bragging rights to the American Legion District 1 Championship.

“Playing them for the district championship is one thing, but not beating them until tonight makes it even sweeter,” Retif head coach Joey Latino told Nola.com’s Joseph Halm. “We wanted to make them battle for nine innings, and tonight we came out on top.”

Looking ahead, Retif and Peake both qualified to play in the Legion’s southeast regional tournament that begins Saturday, July 13. But first, they must settle up on Tuesday with a district championship on the line.
