Urban farmers visit the Vernon/Fowler citrus farm in Jesuit Bend.

The Urban Farming Club took a field trip to Jesuit Bend on Saturday, Dec. 14 to learn the history of the Jesuit’s role in bringing satsumas to Plaquemines Parish and hear from experienced citrus farmers. Club members were given a tour of a farm of 14 different citrus trees, complete with a machine to wash the oranges, and a bag to take home. The Vernon/Fowler farm offered great information about grafting tree varieties, tasty fruit, best weather conditions needed, and winter crops which can be grown and harvested. The Urban Farmers enjoyed their Saturday outing before getting down to studying for exams.
