Junior Rob Weiss (14) mixes it up in the middle. Weiss and his teammates defeated Isidore Newman, 35-20, in the opening round of the 2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Tournament on Wednesday, Dec. 3 in the Birdcage.

With four of its projected starters on the sideline, three of them still on the football sideline, the Blue Jay basketball team defeated Isidore Newman, 35-20, in the opening round of the 2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Tournament. The game was played on Wednesday, Dec. 3, in the Birdcage.

The Jays were without the services of seniors Trey LaForge and Foster Moreau, and junior Mark Beebe, who will compete for the LHSAA Division I State Championship in football on Friday, Dec. 5. Senior Paul Kohnke is injured.

Sophomore Chris Beebe, senior Evan Duhon, and junior Rob Weiss had nine points each for the Jays. All of Duhon’s points came from behind the three-point arc.

After posting a total of seven points in the first period, the Jays went ice cold in the second. But so did the Greenies, who tallied just a single three-ball in the stanza, giving them a 9 to 7 lead at the half. Who could blame the scoreboard operator if he tried to sneak in a short winter’s nap.

Jesuit put up 28 points in the final two quarters to secure the victory. Sophomore Hunt Conroy finished with six points, while freshman Michael Hull had two for the Jays.

Jesuit faces John Curtis at Holy Cross on Thursday, Dec. 4. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for students.
