Jesuit Travels to Lafayette on Friday, November 21 to Take on the Cougars of St. Thomas More

In the opening game of the state playoffs Friday evening at Tad Gormley Stadium, Jesuit eliminated a familiar opponent in St. Augustine, 42-14, and had a surprisingly easy time doing so.

The sixth-seeded Jays will travel to Lafayette on Friday, November 21, to play the fourth-seeded Cougars of St. Thomas More.

If last week’s closing game of the regular season between Jesuit and St. Augustine was a thriller, the playoff game between these same two teams was a bone-rattling chiller. Coming off the previous week’s win over the Purple Knights, 34-20, the Jays were well aware that when playing the same team consecutively, strange and even stranger things have been known to happen. The Jays took the Purple Knights seriously and had a good week of practice. As a result, the Jays dominated from the opening kickoff to the final whistle.

It doesn’t get much better than this: six touchdowns from six Blue Jays, who amassed 301 yards on the ground and 122 in the air for a total offensive output of 413 yards. Jesuit’s defense was tenacious and shut out the Purple Knights in the first half. St. Augustine scored their first touchdown midway through the third quarter, and picked up a cheap second TD with 90 seconds to play.

Jesuit quarterback Trey LaForge was 11 for 15 for 122 yards. He ran the ball three times for 17 yards, scoring a touchdown himself and throwing for three additional TDs. Once again, Chris Mills and Charles Jackson paced Jesuit’s running attack, with Mills gaining 107 yards on 25 carries and Jackson gaining 111 yards on 12 carries. Mills scored Jesuit’s first touchdown on a four- yard run. LaForge ran two yards for the Jays’ second TD and threw a 35-yard strike to Kalija Lipscomb for Jesuit’s third TD of the first half.

In the third quarter, St. Aug scored to cut Jesuit’s lead to 21-6 (a two-point conversion failed). But Jesuit pulled away with three additional touchdowns, the first a LaForge pass from the 5-yard line to a wide open Alex Rabalais in the end zone. Minutes later, LaForge hit Malcolm Ben for a 5-yard touchdown strike. Charles Jackson scored the Jays’ final TD, gathering in a short pass from LaForge and racing some 60 yards to the end zone.

Crew Jacobs kicked 5 out of 6 extra points while Christopher Freibert added the sixth one.
