Jesuit’s 2014 state championship tennis team

Varsity tennis Blue Jays won the LHSAA Division I state tennis tournament in Monroe on Wednesday, April 30, successfully defending their championship title. This win is Jesuit’s 19th state championship over the past 20 years and seventh in a row.

By gaining one point for each victory in the tournament, Jesuit had 14 points through Tuesday Because no other team could reach this total, Jesuit clinched the title by the end of the quarterfinals.

The doubles finals match was a Blue and White one. Junior Gregory Suhor/sophomore Brandon Beck won the doubles title by defeating teammates sophomores Jacob and Jonathan Niehaus, 6-2, 6-2. In the singles finals, senior Jordan Lacoste was bested by Mandeville’s Cody Oregon, 0-6, 1-6.

Competing in the state tournament for Jesuit were eight Blue Jays, two singles and three doubles teams. Both singles players were seeded—Jordan Lacoste (1) and junior Alex Depascual (5) —and two of Jesuit’s three doubles teams competing in the state tournament were seeded—sophomores Jacob and Jonathan Niehaus (2), Gregory Suhor/Brandon Beck (5), and seniors Kevin Mickan/Andrew Tufts. Alternates on hand were junior Patrick Torsch and freshman Jack Steib.

All eight Blue Jays made it to quarterfinals, each player and doubles team besting their opponent in two sets. In the quarterfinals, some noteworthy victories in quarterfinals: Jordan Lacoste took out Catholic’s No. 1 singles player, 6-3, 6-2; Kevin Mickan/Andrew Tufts won over Byrd’s top team, 6-2, 6-1; and Gregory Suhor/Brandon Beck defeated the No. 1 seeds from St. Paul’s, 6-1, 6-2. Alex Depascual took a hit, 3-6, 2-6, to Mandeville.

The team is led by first-year head coach Travis Smith and assistant coach Jay Combe.
