Retif Oil Defeats Otto Candies in Opening Game of American Legion’s State Tournament

Retif Oil defeated Otto Candies, 7-3, in the opening game Saturday for both teams at the American Legion‘s State Tournament. It was Retif’s first win this season against Otto Candies, the Hahnville-based team that recently won the Legion’s S.E. Regional Tournament and was a heavy favorite coming in to the state tourney.

The win keeps Retif in the winners’ bracket while it sends Otto Candies into the losers’ bracket of the Legion’s double elimination tournament.

Retif Oil will play Deanie’s Seafood (Rummel) on Sunday at John Ryan Stadium. First pitch is approximately 6:30 p.m. (35 minutes after the end of the 3:30 game).

“I thought you guys played great tonight,” Coach Joey Latino told the Retif players after the game. “Enjoy this win but not for too long. ”

Trent Forshag returned to the lineup as Retif’s designated hitter, and brought a red hot bat with him. He slugged three hits and drove in three runs. Retif 1st baseman Dan Edmund drove in a run with a double. Singles were delivered by shortstop Alex Galy, 2nd baseman Brandon Briuglio, left fielder Matt Cedro, and centerfielder Harrison Daste.

Jack Burke started on the mound for Retif and pitched six innings. He gave up three runs on seven hits, struck out nine batters, walked one, and hit one batter. Glynn Hyer finished the last three innings on the mound. He gave up two hits and struck out three.
