Mark Songy Named 2014 Coach of the Year
The Greater New Orleans Quarterback Club honored three members of Jesuit’s 2014 state championship football team. The final meeting of the year took place on Monday, Dec. 15 at The Cannery on Toulouse Street in Mid-City.
Seniors Trey LaForge (QB) and Charles Jackson (RB) were among 14 players from across the metro area who received handsome trophies for individual efforts during the 2014 season. Head coach Mark Songy was named the QB Club’s Coach of the Year.
LaForge completed 14 of 18 passes for 236 yards against Holy Cross on Oct. 10 at Tad Gormley Stadium. He threw two touchdowns and ran for a third in a 56-14 victory over the Tigers.
Jackson was at his best on the brightest stage — the LHSAA Division I state championship game. The diminutive yet powerful running back carried the ball 16 times for 142 yards against John Curtis Christian in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Blue Jays won the game, 17-14. LaForge threw a pair of touchdown passes to junior Kalija Lipscomb in the game. It was Jesuit’s first football title since 1960.
The last award of the day went to a surprised and humbled Songy, who took over as head coach this summer.
“I had the best seat in the house watching some of the top coaches in the city work with an outstanding group of young men,” Songy said.
In addition to thanking his sideline assistants, Songy went out of his way to recognize and praise the members of his senior class, who were special guests of school president Fr. Anthony McGinn ’66, who wanted his seniors to be a part of this special day. Also present were Gerald and Tina White, Carl and Bridget LaForge, principal Peter Kernion ’90, offensive coordinator Joe Chango, defensive coordinator Troy Baglio, offensive line coach Graham Jarrott, kicking coach Kurt Werling ’91, athletic trainer Kenny Trahan, alumni director Mat Grau ’68, and Tom Bagwill, who is Jesuit’s director of institutional advancement.
NFL and Saints Hall of Fame inductee Rickey Jackson assisted with the award presentation.
