In a Steady Rain, Jays Walk All Over the Patriots, 9-2
Among the first five Blue Jays who crossed home plate, four were given free tickets to first base via walks. By the end of the Jesuit – John Ehret game on Saturday, April 5 at John Ryan Stadium, 13 Blue Jays were walked. It made for a long game, a very long game, especially when most of it was played in a steady rain.
By the way, the Jays won this non-district game, 9-2, improving their overall record to 20-3. Jesuit, currently 4-0 in district play, has the opportunity to go to 5-0 on Tuesday, April 8. That’s when the Jays cross the river to play Archbishop Shaw in the final district game of the first round. First pitch on the Eagles’ diamond is 4 p.m.
Against the Patriots, senior Christian Latino (4-0) pitched six full innings, giving up six hits and two runs, only one of which was earned, and striking out four batters. For the last inning, junior Logan Hornung was sent to the mound to finish the job. He struck out one Patriot and nailed down the other two outs, but not before one of the Patriots notched his team’s seventh hit of the game, a triple. However, the Patriot was left stranded on third base.
The Jays had only eight hits as a team, one more than the Patriots. No one Jay had two or more hits, although Dan Edmund (1B), Brandon Sequeira (3B), and Trent Forshag (C) each had a double. Edmund had two ribbies.
In addition to all those walks, two Blue Jays were hit by pitches. When it rains, it pours.
