Junior Sam Ovella and freshman Elijah Morgan go up for a rebound in CYO Tournament action against De La Salle on Thursday, Dec. 3.

Jesuit’s basketball team ran into a Cavalier buzz saw in the second round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Tournament on Thursday night at the Birdcage. De La Salle sprinted out of the gate and never looked back as they cruised to an 83-47 victory over the Blue Jays.

The Cavaliers converted 56% of their field goal attempts on the evening, including ten three-pointers.

Jesuit actually kept pace on field goal percentage, shooting 50% from the field. But the differentials in turnovers (20-11)  and offensive rebounds (15-4) allowed the Cavaliers to take almost twice as many field goal attempts as Jesuit (59-30).

Junior Sam Ovella paced the Jays with 12 points, draining five of six shots from the field and both of his free throws. Sophomore Drew Black added ten points on a perfect stat line (three of three from the field and four of four from the foul line). He also pulled down a team high four rebounds. Senior Rob Weiss, coming off a 29-point night in the Jays’ opening round win over Lake Area New Tech, was held to seven.

Jesuit returns to tournament action on Saturday for a 5:00 p.m. consolation bracket match-up in the Birdcage with Brother Martin.
