Looney Tunes Up for Next Level, No-Hits Retif in Opener of Two-Game Set
Three Blue Jay errors in the top of the sixth inning led to three runs and, ultimately, the third loss of the young American Legion baseball season for Retif Oil in a game played Friday night at John Ryan Stadium.
Jesuit senior Brandon Briuglio had been pitching a splendid game, going toe to toe with Columbia’s (Tennessee) David Looney, a Columbia State Community College signee. Briuglio was even getting some solid help along the way, including a lunging tag by catcher Trent Forshag. But Retif’s defensive wheels fell off in the 6th.
The Jays tried to scrape together a rally in the bottom of the seventh after reliever Nick Ray took care of the top of the inning, but the game ended when Daniel Edmund lined out to short, leaving Scott Crabtree stranded on second, the final score at 3-0, and a no-hitter on the books for Looney.
With the loss, Retif falls to 1-3 for the summer, while Columbia improved to 2-0. The two teams square off again Saturday morning, June 6, at 10:00 a.m. at John Ryan Stadium. Admission is $5 for students and adults; $3 for children 6-11.
