The Blue Jay swimming team finished the 2015 season in the LHSAA Division 1 state championships as the runner-up for the third consecutive year. The action took place at the SPAR Aquatic Center in Sulphur, with preliminaries on Nov. 20 and finals on Nov. 21.
Facing tough competition from Catholic of Baton Rouge (445), Jesuit racked up 299.3 points for the second-place spot, ahead of St. Paul’s (196.4), Hahnville (184.5), and Mandeville (145.6).
Head coach Bret Hanemann ’85 said he’s proud of his team. “We swam our best times of the year against a stacked Catholic high team.”
Jesuit swimmers placed in the coveted top three spots in eight events, including three races — 200 IM, 50 Free, and 100 Free — that were finished with record-breaking times from the competition.
The whole event was “lightning-fast,” said assistant coach Tré Roux ’87. “Just about every kid swam a lifetime best — some taking three seconds off their times, which is unheard of.”
The Blue Jay team was led by junior Josh Armond, who took second in both the 200 Free and 500 Free. Contributing to the strong finish were junior Jack Jackson who took second in the 50 Free and third in the 100 Fly, and freshman Davis Edwards who took third in both the 500 Free and the 200 IM. Senior Cade Fuxan took third in the 100 Fly.
The relay team of junior Noah Wilkins, senior Felix Rabito, Fuxan, and Jackson claimed third in the 200 Medley. The team of sophomore Jack Baudouin, Edwards, freshman Charles Korndorffer, and Armond took fifth in the 400 Free.
Seniors Felix Rabito and Brady Stiller were honored as Academic All-State.
“It’s a tough loss, but we have a strong, young group going forward,” Hanemann added.
