On Tuesday, October 26th, pre-freshmen and freshmen will take the PSAT 8/9, and sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT. The extra motivation from the rally attempted grant all Blue Jays the enthusiasm to slay the proverbial PSAT dragon and achieve adequate scores on this year’s exam.

A sophomore fine arts student asks Paul McCrae a question during a class assignment in the Jesuit Auditorium. Maestro McCrae helped create and is the host of a video series called “Discovering The Orchestra,” a series that Joe Caluda ’79 has shown his fine arts classes for the last 25 years. British born and educated in the United States, McRae was trained at the world famous Juilliard School in New York, the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Sienna, Italy. He began his professional musical career as a trumpet player by becoming the youngest permanent member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra at only 19. 

Scout Serpas ’13 brings his Spanish II class to the Traditions Courtyard to enjoy Yerba Mate tea as a reward for finishing a long week. “Yerba Mate” is typically consumed in Argentina and Uruguay, and “la bombilla” is the straw they use to drink the tea out of the mate (the cup). Former Spanish teacher and current Jesuit president Fr. John Brown, S.J., heard about the Friday morning festivities and could not help but attend. 

Fr. William Farge, S.J., speaks to Jesuit sodalists about the history of the Catholic Samurai during the second half of lunch in the Chapel of the North American Martyrs. Fr. Farge taught English and religion at Jesuit high schools in Hiroshima and Kobe, Japan from 1978 to 1990. His knowledge of this topic was vast, and his stories kept those gathered interested and engrossed in the subject. 

Ninth grade Theology teacher Scott Delatte ’06 explains the rich depictions in The Holy Name of Jesus Chapel. After Delatte answered questions about the imagery in the chapel, he explained that the saints depicted in those images are more alive now than they were when they were on Earth because they are in the constant presence of God. To end the lecture, he led the singing of the litany of saints that resulted in a beautiful chorus to end the school day. 

Jesuit is not only trying to defeat Holy Cross on the gridiron, but also on the chin-up bar. Each year, The Great American Rivalry Series sponsors a chin-up contest between the two schools, and freshman Connor LaCour is doing his best to make sure that his chin, and the Jays, finish on top. 

Students gather in The Chapel of the North American Martyrs to celebrate the Feast of the Archangels. This student Mass was a special one as the whole student body was able to congregate at one time to honor the Holy Sacrifice for the first time in over a year. 

Senior cheerleaders James Alvarez and Benjamin Babin explain the role of cheerleaders and the excitement of being on the sideline of every football and basketball game during the first rush day event. Over the next two days, the Jesuit student body will be exposed to over 40 different clubs and co-curriculars given the opportunity to learn and delve deeper into the Jesuit High School community. Co-curriculars are an extremely important part of what makes the Jesuit experience memorable and impactful, so if you are a pre-freshman or a senior, do not hesitate to check out the commons during lunch to find your next favorite hobby.

As Welcome Weeks is set to reach its end, the Jesuit student council has a special pep rally planned for 2 p.m. today in the Benson Arena to prepare the student body for a Friday night matchup with the Crusaders from Brother Martin. 

During the first half of lunch, junior class president Will Sheridan tries to fool fellow students by hiding a ball under three cups. The students were never fooled. Next up for welcome week is diet training that will take place tomorrow during both lunch periods. 

The Jesuit drumline returns to regular practices as all Blue Jays return to campus after evacuating from hurricane Ida. Eager to get back on the sticks, the drumline filled up the Jesuit auditorium with pleasant cadences in anticipation for their return to the gridiron and concerts alike. 

With no electricity or running water on campus, the Holy Name of Jesus Chapel—known by students and alumni as the “small chapel” on campus— continues to be used by the community of Jesuits on Carrollton & Banks. In this rare photo, the iconic stained glass windows are opened to allow airflow into the chapel. Biology teacher Matthew Firmin ’10 oversees two of his two ninth grade students as they progress in their pH lab. For one of the first labs of the year, students were asked to mix different compounds and test the pH level of each. Firmin picked this exercise to instill the scientific method in his young students as a tool that can carry them throughout their Jesuit careers. 

Eighth grader Ryder Comboy plays “Rock, Paper, Scissors” to determine which class had to begin singing the Jesuit Alma Mater in the Jesuit Courtyard. Two theology classes, taught by Peter Flores ’09, squared off in a good ole fashioned “Alma Mater Off” after school on Tuesday. With a large number of Blue Jays gathered and co-band director Mr. Giaccone judging, slot six took home the prize of best performance over slot five in a highly contested battle of the voices.
