Eighth grader Ryder Comboy plays “Rock, Paper, Scissors” to determine which class had to begin singing the Jesuit Alma Mater in the Jesuit Courtyard. Two theology classes, taught by Peter Flores ’09, squared off in a good ole fashioned “Alma Mater Off” after school on Tuesday. With a large number of Blue Jays gathered and co-band director Mr. Giaccone judging, slot six took home the prize of best performance over slot five in a highly contested battle of the voices.

Murphy encouraged everyone to pray for vocations, especially for those who are experiencing a pull to the priesthood that they may embrace the grace that God has provided. 

Senior baseball standout Holden Hess hits the gong during morning assembly in the Jesuit courtyard. Student body president Joe Liberto hyped up the entire student body throughout the presentation as the gong looks to become a permanent fixture on campus.

Some would say that Jesuit started the chicken wars, but now we are officially ending them. Stop by the newly renovated cafeteria during lunch to get your hands on this fried piece of poultry. 

Communications director Christian Bautista ’06 speaks to new and returning parents about the Jesuit website. The annual breakfast welcomed parents into the Jesuit community and reminded experienced ones of the improvements since they last saw them. Jesuit president Fr. John Brown, S.J., IT department head Jordan Holmer ’12, and Eighth grade counselor Robin Rhodes also spoke about CANVAS, study tips, and the current state of Jesuit High School among other topics.

Following a two day week, Jesuit students can now claim that they made it through their first academic Monday of the 2021-2022 school year. By getting through this threshold, students can now look forward to Welcome Week and other fall school activities. 

On a typically humid August Day, Blue Jays gathered in the courtyard for their first assembly of the 2021 school year. Principal Peter Kernion ’90 spoke about the importance of the upcoming year, even if certain activities look different. President Fr. John Brown, S.J., followed by saying that students should look up for inspiration and guidance from their teachers and the ultimate truth that is God. 

In addition to starting an exciting new year, Blue Jays young and old had the opportunity to gather in the newly renovated Jesuit Cafeteria. The shiny building will also house a new company that will be responsible for feeding Jesuit students: Pigeon Catering. From the wall wraps illustrating iconic Jesuit moments to the delicious smells that spread throughout, there will be something for everyone to love. 

Four Class of 2017 Blue Jays found their way back to Carrollton & Banks and gave back to the institution that helped form them by handing out free senior shirts on Registration day. Bennett Faust, Jack Pontin, Cullen Unsworth, and Christian Marks assisted students during the first registration day that did not include the physical purchasing of books on campus as that step has moved completely online. Welcome back to campus Blue Jays!

Included in the renovation for the Jesuit Cafeteria, Coca-Cola branded refrigerators can be seen inside the shiney interior. With school starting this week, the new and improved cafeteria will be ready to host any hungry Jesuit student with a novel aesthetic and a variety of food choices. 

Assistant to the president for mission Jeremy Reuther ’01 and academic assistant principal Kathy Juhas lead the new teachers in an exercise about the life of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Jesuit is excited to welcome all the new members of the faculty as the start of school is right around the corner. 

On Saturday, July 31, Jesuits and laymen alike gathered at the Holy Name of Jesus Church on St. Charles to celebrate the feast of the founder of the society of Jesus. Many Jesuits from Jesuit High School populated the Altar including new regent Jeff Miraflor, S.J. (seen carrying the cross), Fr. Anthony McGinn, S.J., Fr. Kevin Dyer, S.J., Fr. Stephen Kramer, S.J., and Jesuit president Fr. John Brown, S.J.

A new Blue Jay mother and her son browse the selection in the temporary Blue Jay shop in room 132. Under the new guidance of Wanda Montalbano, the fresh and improved shop will be moving into the new Administrative building once construction is completed. 

In preparation for band camp next week, members of the Jesuit High School band met on Carrollton & Banks to shake off some summer rust, get sized for uniforms, and meet up with friends and mentors. The Jays usually travel to Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, but this year the camp will mostly take place at Pan American Stadium. 

The Division I State Championship Jesuit baseball team visited the floor of the LA House of Representatives in Baton Rouge on Wednesday, July 21. The Jays are fresh off an American Legion State Championship, but they found the time to visit the Capitol in their Sunday best and spoke with Gov. John Bel Edwards, Rep. John Illg’ 84 and Rep. Matthew Willard ’06.
