Risen Star, owned and trained by Louis J. Roussel III ’63, took two jewels in the triple crown of racing in 1988 as the winner of the Preakness and Belmont. Roussel was the major benefactor for Jesuit’s “21st Century Campaign—a Commitment to Excellence.” As many Blue Jay alums may know, the Class of ’63 graduate was also the major benefactor of the Louis J. Roussel, Jr. Physical Education building, which Louis III named in honor of his father Louis, Jr.

This week’s Flashback Friday Wild Photo comes from the Summer of 1988 edition of JayNotes. When he won the two races in ’88, Roussel had reached exactly 25 years since graduating from Jesuit—his Silver Anniversary.

This summer, the Blue Jay Band and Jayettes are enjoying a cultural exchange of a lifetime! The group of 151 Blue Jay Bandsmen, Jayettes, and their families tour Italy this year before making their way to Bamberg, Germany, which is the home of the student exchange program that is now in its 18th year. Here the travel-hearty troop pulls over for a group photo on Lake Como, Italy.

Jay Glorioso ’92, John Unsworth ’92, Gary Carroll ’91, and Kip Kloesel ’92 begin the day with the Lord as they receive spiritual nourishment before the big race. This Throwback Thursday photo was taken from the “Blue Jay 5-K Race” section of the 1991 Jesuit yearbook. Posting the best time of the faculty runners that year was math teacher John Lavie ’83.

Welcome back to the summer edition of Throwback Thursdays! Throughout the month of July, the Thursday Wild Photo will be a blast from the past.

Ten years and one month ago, the Class of 1953 met in the Student Commons for their 55-year stag reunion. One of the photos that made the reunion gallery was this group of ’53 Blue Jays who each attended St. Rose de Lima elementary school. On the top row, John Faherty, Harold Grisamore, and Edmond Daigle posed for a photo with ’53 classmates Joe d’Aquin, Edward Haas, and Gasper Schiro (seated). Many memories will be recreated at the Class of 1953’s 65-year reunion this weekend, the final weekend of the 2018 reunion season!

While St. Rose de Lima School has since been transformed into Bayou Treme Center for Arts and Education, the church still stands tall on Bayou Road in New Orleans.

Campers at Jesuit Day Camp experience Water Day, one of the most anticipated days of the summer. Camp director Troy Baglio and his team of counselors oversaw three giant water slides on Will Clark Field. The combination of slides, water guns, and other outside activities provided every camper with fun memories to carry on through the summer!

Rising senior and first baseman Marc Dougherty (#22) puts up the “2-out” symbol to inform the outfielders that only one out remains in the inning. And if this baseball Wild Photo hasn’t shown enough of the number “2,” note that the Retif Oilers have crossed the midway point in their season…moving on to Part Two! For two weeks at the beginning of June, the newly-renovated gym becomes Biddy Basecamp, as young players from ages 6-11 descend upon the hardwood for summer basketball camp. With both morning and afternoon sessions, the camp develops fundamentals, hosts team play and individual competition, and strengthens understanding of the game through instructional videos. Assistant basketball coach Jonathan Hernandez ’00 calls out the schedule of the next competition as players run to their spots.

Steve “Smitty” Smith, the curator of the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum, gives an in-depth explanation on aircraft to Jesuit’s MCJROTC San Diego group. Smith explained how much static aircraft exists on-site at the museum. The large group of MCJROTC cadets traveled to San Diego, California, for the annual Cadet Leadership Camp.  The purpose of the five-day trip was to teach cadets leadership skills, build camaraderie, and get a taste of military life.

Campers in Jesuit’s Summer Day Camp show how much they love their half-hour of lunchtime. All the fun of Jesuit Summer Camp started on Monday, June 4. The full Six-Week Day Camp runs from June 4 to July 13, and there are two Three-Week Day Camp sessions that run from Monday, June 4 – Friday, June 22, 2018 and Monday, June 25 – Friday, July 13, 2018.

Student activities director Matt Orillion ’98, who leads the annual 8th grade pilgrimage, calls out instructions to the 150+ pre-freshmen before the Jesuit group tours the historic Alamo! More than half of the Class of 2022 celebrated the end of the school year on the pilgrimage to the Catholic missions of San Antonio, Texas, from May 25- 28. The pilgrimage allows the rising freshmen class to come together in faith, fun, and friendship.

Exam week can be a time of concentrated study and the pressure to finish the year on a high note. On the other hand, it can also be at time to sit back and catch some shade. Pre-freshmen Jackson Wender, Hussain Ali, and Alex McChesky do just that, and also share a laugh, after completing their Monday exams. A group of eight Blue Jays enjoyed their time together under the oaks in Traditions Courtyard, then parted ways to prepare for their remaining Fourth Quarter Exams.

Pre-freshman Paul Nguyen patiently cleans out his locker on the last day of classes. While they may have some fourth quarter exams scheduled in 4th-floor classrooms, the eighth graders have completed their daily treks up to their top-floor lockers. Finish strong, Blue Jays!

Events coordinator D.J. Galiano ’07 stands proudly in front of Jesuit’s newest school bus after parking it in the lot for the first time. Galiano traveled to Hammond, La. with Mr. Jimmy Huck, Jesuit’s maintenance and facilities director, to pick up the bus. The two returned home safely with a brand new Saf-T-Liner® HDX. This bright yellow motor vehicle is produced by Thomas Built Buses Incorporated, and, as Mr. Galiano can now confirm, the wheels on the bus go ’round and ’round.

At the student council general meeting, pre-freshman Mitchell Stevens fills out a nomination form to become a Homeroom Representative as upcoming student council president Dowen Fife encourages others to do so. Students can cast their vote for this election on the Canvas homepage. Voting will be open any time from Wednesday, May 16, through Thursday, May 17. Students do not have to be on campus to cast a vote.

Brother Billy Dardis, S.J. ’58 shows off the birthday balloon he received from members of the Class of 1968. Br. Dardis, who turned 78 over the weekend, attended the Class of ’68 Couples’ Reunion to honor the 50-year class members and their guests. Happy Birthday, Brother!

Upcoming student council president Dowen Fife and senior class president Langston Goldenberg announce freshman Josh Schmidt as the winner of the Student Council’s “Once de Mayo Churro Dunk-off.” Donning a Pistol Pete jersey and a luchador mask, Shmidt stole the show when he dunked not once, not twice, but three times! The Traditions courtyard was boisterous with the sound of the crowd cheering his name, as he was voted best slam dunk by the panel of judges—former student council president Paul Treuting, Coach Earl Johnson, and  Fr. Kevin Dyer, S.J.—and awarded a $25 Best Buy gift card for his victory. Students were encouraged to wear their favorite basketball jersey and enjoyed free churros and chocolate dunk sauce while they watched the dunk-off competition.
