Back from the Thanksgiving break, state championship swimming coach Bret Hanemann ’85 congratulates his Blue Jay swimmers for their great accomplishments in mid-November. Morning Assembly allowed Coach Hanemann the opportunity to present the state championship team, and it allowed the swimmers to present the first place trophy in front of the student body. Standing in front of the podium are swimmers Austin Carter (holding trophy), Andrew Dufour, Michael Foley, Connor Schwartz and Joel Guerra. The hardware is back home at Carrollton and Banks! The Biotechnology Club met Thursday afternoon for several demonstrations in chemical chain reactions. Travis Kieff ’17, a freshman at UNO majoring in mechanical engineering, returned to his alma mater to help out Biotechnology Club moderator Mrs. Amy Tassin. In his first demonstration, Kieff explained how and why vinegar mixed with baking soda releases carbon dioxide gas, which can be used in chemical volcanoes and other projects. Kieff filled a beaker with baking soda, added the vinegar, and let the CO2 fill a balloon. Here, freshman Garrison Trahant gets a close up of the chemical effects of the experiment.

Representatives from The Blue Jay student newspaper, yearbook, and Model United Nations Club meet in Ignatius Hall with members of the New Orleans Citizen Diplomacy Council. The council is a nonprofit organization that arranges professional appointments and cultural activities for over 500 international leaders. Members are sent to New Orleans annually by the U.S. Department of State International Visitor Leadership Program and other programs. During fourth period, 22 international visitors from several countries (all English-speakers) accompanied by four International Visitor Liaisons interacted with students and teachers at Jesuit about its award-winning, student-run school newspaper.

“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players”— a line made famous in William Shakespeare’s As You Like It, now playing on the Jesuit Philelectic Society stage. Here we see Rosalind (Carlie Goodlet) and Celia (Audrey Owen) meeting Touchstone the Fool (senior Thomas Sagona). For their 156th fall season, the Phils are capturing the spirit of Shakespeare with two separate performances, the other being Twelfth Night, which runs this week. When it comes to rooting for the Jesuit football team, senior Aubert Waguespack is all in. In fact, Waguespack has not missed a single game, faithfully present and cheering in Jesuit’s student section, affectionately known as “the Gizzard,” all season long. At Morning Assembly on Friday, Waguespack ascended the podium and inspired all students to be there for the first round playoff game between Jesuit and St. Augustine. He called out the “pre-freshmen… freshmen… sophomores… and juniors…,” ending the fervorino with the encouraging thought, “Seniors will lead you.”

Junior wrestlers Michael Fitzsimmons, sporting his buttoned-up letterman jacket, and Jack Grady (right) stay bundled up during a windy lunch hour on Thursday in Traditions Courtyard. Wrestlers opened their season in the first weekend of November at the Warrior Open in Baton Rouge and look ahead to their first dual meet against Rummel on Wednesday, Nov. 15. Jacob D’Amico, Ethan Devlin, Tyler Westfall, Brett Steele, and Sebi de Gracia enjoy lunch on Friday’s Blue and White Day, where students wore a blue, white, or a blue and white shirt to school. Ethan Devlin chose the third option as he sported a blue and white hawaiian shirt. But this wasn’t just any hawaiian shirt! This particular shirt was graced with the Philelectic Society patch on the upper-right portion. Devlin and his friends are getting excited about the upcoming shows for the 2017 fall season as the Phils present William Shakespeare’s As You Like It and Twelfth Night. Math teacher Mrs. Andrea Mika takes time after school to give extra help every Monday and Wednesday in Room 224. In fact,  free After School Tutoring is offered to every pre-freshman or freshman in need of extra help in math, science, English, and Spanish. From 3:15 to 4:15 p.m., a teacher from each of these subjects is available on different days and in different classrooms, depending on the subject. View the After School Tutoring Schedule online, which is also posted in the hallways on every floor in the school building.

During the second half of lunch today, students in Kate Arthurs-Goldberg’s public speaking class gave a ghoulish Halloween-themed radio theatre performance of Edgar Allen Poe’s short story, “The Cask of Amontillado” and Rudyard Kipling’s “Mark of the Beast.” While a handful of students read the story, others used props to create spine-tingling live Foley sound effects, like glass breaking and doors slamming. In an effort to be better stewards of the environment, members of the National Honor Society earn service hours by collecting recycling every Thursday afternoon. Jesuit recycles plastic, paper, cardboard, and aluminum. Recycling bins are available throughout the school, in classrooms, offices, the cafeteria, and the Student Commons. It’s never too early to gather information for making the right decision about college. Admission representatives regularly meet with students during lunch to make brief presentations and field students’ questions about campus life. A group of interested Blue Jays made their way to Room 121 during lunch to visit with an admission representative from Johns Hopkins University. These visits to campus are part of an broader program of college planning coordinated by the guidance department.

Pre-freshmen Jacob Askar, Anthony Perez, Michael Nair, and Gabriel Sacasa take a much needed break after a four-hour-long band rehearsal on Thursday, Oct. 19. The Blue Jay Band Booster club provided jambalaya, snacks, and soft drinks for the band members who are preparing for the District VI Marching Band Assessment Festival on October 30 at Joe Yenni Stadium. The extended practice came on the last day of first quarter exams. Needless to say, the students were grateful for the relaxation and sustenance.

In case Blue Jays wanted to learn one more vocabulary word following their first quarter English exams, crunch time is defined as “a critical moment or period (as near the end of a game) when decisive action is needed.” Once the English/Biology II, Fine Arts II, and other Monday exams ended, students switched gears to their Tuesday tests. Freshman Hunter Richardson helps pre-freshman Conner Zimmerman through a tough math problem similar to ones that will be on Mrs. JoAnn Schexnayder’s Algebra I exam Tuesday morning. Richardson had Mrs. Schexnayder’s class last year and volunteered his time during lunchtime crunch time on Monday.

The Jesuit student council, with the help of guidance counselor Mrs. Mary Favalora, led a lunchtime pep rally unlike any other in Traditions Courtyard. The pep rally was not for a football game. Not for a swim meet, or a wrestling meet. In fact, it wasn’t for an athletic event at all. It was a PSAT Pep Rally, the first of its kind at Carrollton and Banks.

In order to get their minds right for the school-wide Wednesday testing day, student council members attracted a large number of Blue Jays to the pep rally corner of the courtyard. From the second floor balcony they threw No. 2 pencils and “Thinking Caps” to students in the crowd. Mrs. Favalora led the group in a pump-up speech, which concluded with the cheer, “I Can, I Will!” Student council executive aide Paul James ended the pep rally, chanting “I believe that we will merit!” The PSAT Warrior-hopefuls in the junior class aim to win the battle tomorrow against the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test.
